Packing for a two week holiday should, in theory, be straightforward.
Two weeks is long enough that you feel like you need everything, but short enough that you could technically survive with a capsule wardrobe if you were a completely different, highly disciplined version of yourself.
I am not that version of myself.
So over time, I’ve stopped trying to pack for an imaginary “perfect holiday me” and started packing for the version of me who repeats outfits, prioritises comfort, and still somehow forgets at least one essential item every single time.
This is my realistic 2 week holiday packing list.
The mindset shift: I stopped packing for two weeks of different personalities
The biggest mistake I used to make was packing like I was going to reinvent my entire lifestyle abroad.
I would pack:
Too many “nice dinner” outfits
Too many shoes I would never wear
Skincare I had never used before
And enough books for a small literary festival
Now I’ve accepted a simple truth:
For two weeks away, I still wear the same core outfits on repeat.
Once I understood that, everything got easier.
Clothing: realistic outfits for two weeks, not fourteen fantasy days
This is where I used to massively overpack.
Now I aim for mix-and-match pieces that actually get worn.
Day outfits
For a two week trip, I pack:
5–6 daytime outfits that can be repeated
Lightweight dresses, shorts and tops that mix easily
A couple of “throw on and go” outfits for travel mornings or relaxed days
In reality, I rotate through the same favourites and ignore the rest.
Evening outfits
3–4 relaxed evening outfits
One slightly dressier option (that I tell myself I will wear more than I actually do)
Two weeks sounds like you need variety. You don’t. You need options you actually like wearing.
Swimwear
3–4 swimsuits or bikinis
1–2 cover-ups
I always overpack swimwear, but it’s one of the few things I don’t regret.
Sleepwear
One oversized t-shirt
Underwear and socks
I do not underpack this anymore. Experience has taught me better.
Layers
One light cardigan or shirt
One jumper for travel days or cooler evenings
Shoes: the most simplified part of my packing
Shoes used to be where my suitcase went wrong every time.
Now I stick to:
Sandals (everyday wear)
Trainers (travel days and walking)
One nicer pair for evenings
If it hurts my feet at home, it does not go on a two week holiday. Simple rule, fewer regrets.
Toiletries: the edited version
This is heavily streamlined thanks to my separate beauty bag system.
For two weeks, I take:
Skincare essentials only
Suncream (face and body)
Shampoo and conditioner (travel sizes or decanted)
Body wash
Moisturiser
Deodorant
Minimal makeup bag
No duplicates. No backups. No “just in case” versions of things I already packed.
Tech and essentials I never skip
These are non-negotiable for me now.
Phone and charger
Portable charger
Plug adapter
Headphones or AirPods
Kindle
Charging cables
Passport and travel wallet
The Kindle is arguably the most important item here for a two week trip. I will not be persuaded otherwise.
Hand luggage for travel day
This is where I used to go wrong the most, so I now treat it separately.
Passport
Phone
Wallet
Kindle or book
Headphones
Empty water bottle (for after security)
Snacks
Lip balm
Suncream (small size)
Light jumper or scarf
If travel day goes wrong, it is usually because I forgot something from this list.
What I always forget (even after years of travelling)
No matter how many lists I write, these still get left behind sometimes:
Hair ties
Sunglasses
Phone charger
Toothbrush
One random essential I only notice too late
I now mentally budget for forgetting one item. It reduces stress.
What I still overpack for two weeks
Even with experience, I am not perfect.
Extra dresses I don’t wear
Too many “nice” outfits
Books I don’t finish
Makeup I barely touch
Shoes I never leave the suitcase
I’ve accepted this is part of my process.
My two week packing rule
If I wouldn’t wear it in the next week at home, I don’t pack it.
If I hesitate for more than 10 seconds, it doesn’t go.
And if I say “just in case,” it is almost always unnecessary.
Final thoughts
A two week holiday used to feel like a packing challenge I needed to win.
Now it’s just about being realistic.
I still overpack slightly, but it’s controlled, intentional overpacking rather than chaos-driven panic packing.
And honestly, that feels like progress.
Next up: travel essentials I never fly without — the small things that make a surprisingly big difference on long travel days and airport journeys.
