Foods I’ll Never Stop Ordering at Restaurants

I always tell myself that this time I’m going to be adventurous when I order. I’ll scan the menu properly, ignore my usual favourites and try something completely new.

And then I see a Caprese salad… and all of that ambition quietly disappears.

Some foods just hit every time, and I’ve accepted that I’m never going to stop ordering them.

First up is a Caprese salad. It’s simple, but that’s exactly the point. Good tomatoes, creamy mozzarella, fresh basil and a generous drizzle of balsamic. No unnecessary reinventions, no deconstructed chaos—just something fresh that actually tastes like its ingredients. If it’s on a menu, I’m ordering it without hesitation.

Then there are mains, and this is where I become extremely predictable.

If there’s a pasta alla vodka on the menu, that’s almost always my choice. It’s rich, creamy, tomatoey and basically comfort food in a bowl. If not, I’ll go for a slow-cooked beef ragù every time. The kind that clings to the pasta properly and comes topped with far too much parmesan (there’s no such thing as too much, by the way).

And then there’s my second consistent order: a Caesar salad, but with one important change. Swap the chicken for halloumi. Always. The salty, golden, slightly squeaky halloumi just works so much better for me than chicken ever has. Add crisp lettuce, crunchy croutons and a proper garlicky dressing and I’m happy.

Chips are non-negotiable too. If I see perfectly salted skin-on fries, they’re making it onto the table. Bonus points if they’re crispy enough to make that satisfying crunch sound when you break into them.

One thing you’ll rarely catch me ordering? Dessert. I’m just not a dessert person. By the time I’ve finished my main, I’m done. While everyone else is debating brownies versus cheesecake, I’m perfectly content with another drink and maybe stealing a bite or two from someone else’s plate.

Maybe one day I’ll become the kind of person who orders something new every time I go out.

But realistically? If restaurants keep serving Caprese salads, pasta alla vodka, beef ragù, Caesar salads with halloumi and proper fries… I’m not changing anytime soon.
